Happy birthday, Jesus! That’s the reason for the Christmas season.
By now you’ve opened your presents, watched the Christmas parade, and have eaten or are getting ready to eat whatever the traditional Christmas meal consists of in your culture. For us, that meal includes something similar to the following menu: turkey, dressing, homemade dumplings, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, Brussels sprouts, corn, cranberry salad, rolls, and our favorite desserts, Among our favorite Christmas desserts are homemade apple stack cake, cherry pie, banana pudding, egg nog pie, and/or pumpkin pie. As much as we enjoy all the festivities of exchanging gifts, watching parades, and enjoying the fellowship of a festive Christmas dinner with family, we want to remind you of the real reason for this season, celebrating the birth of Jesus, our Savior and Lord, the Son of God.
Of course, Jesus’ birth marks the beginning of only His human existence. As John says of Him, using the Greek term Logos, translated “the Word”:
John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
Jesus Himself had no beginning and will have no end, He was not created, but He created ALL things as God the Son. The skeptics will claim Jesus never existed, that Christmas is a fairy tale, and dismiss it with a “Bah! Humbug!”. But time itself is marked by His birth even in this year 2017 AD, Anno Domini, the Year of our Lord. His birth is the only reason for the boundary between so-called Common Era and Before Common Era, and the unbelievers can never roll it back, even if they should someday succeed in erasing “In God We Trust” from our currency.
He was promised from of old. Even the Jews’ expectation of His arrival was surpassed by the Magi, who had the Scriptures in the Greek Septuagint. They knew to look for a star, because Numbers 24:17 said “…A star shall come forth from Jacob, A scepter shall rise from Israel…”. They knew the time had arrived at last, because to Daniel (Daniel 9:24-27) was revealed the exact time, being 490 years (seventy sevens of years) from the Persian king Cyrus’ decree to rebuild Jerusalem to the death of Messiah the Prince.
So even more than Christmas coming anyhow, despite the Grinch’s attempt to stop Christmas from coming, Jesus came anyhow, right on time. Herod’s murderous scheme could not stop the first Christmas, and Caesar Augustus, that pagan Roman emperor, played right into fulfilling the prophesy of Micah 5:2 by commanding Joseph and Mary to return to Bethlehem, the city of Joseph’s birth to be taxed by the census, just in time for Jesus to enter the world in a feed trough for cattle.
Micah 5:2 “But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity.”
And the cross can not stop the best present of all from giving forever and ever! The risen, glorified and ascended Jesus told a terrified John, “…“Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last,18 and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore…” (Revelation 1:17-18) Jesus is the same, yesterday, today, and forever! He is our salvation now and forever. Have you accepted this FREE gift of Salvation? If not, what better time than the present? For those who now repent and accept Christ as Lord and Savior, we’d love to hear from you. So, for everyone until He returns, again this year of our Lord 2017, Merry Christmas!
